Destination Features
- Megève is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department of the French Alps. Conceived in the 1920’s by the Rothschild family, Megeve was the first purpose-built resort in the Alps and has always been a prime destination for the French aristocracy, remaining one of the most famous and fanciest ski resorts in the world. As well as extensive Alpine skiing, Megeve is a popular summer holiday destination and is especially renowned for its golfing opportunities. Megeve is in a lovely sunny setting and has a beautifully preserved, partly medieval car-free town centre which makes it very appealing to a wide range of guests.
- Most slopes in Megève are below the treeline and have extensive wide open areas. There are three mountains linked with a series of gondolas, and the highest point is Cote 2000, which often has the best snow. The resort is best suited to beginner and intermediate skiers as there are plenty of cruising blues on the 445 kilometres of slopes. There is some terrain for experts, though not extensive. Megève is a great resort to combine on-slope and off-slope activity. In town, there is a casino, a choice of luxury shops, and a sports facility with an Olympic sized pool and tennis courts.
- Megève is a mecca for foodies with plenty of top class restaurants to choose from. A few popular places to eat include le 1920, which has 2 Michelin stars under chef Julien Gatillon, Le Vieux Megeve which is a popular traditional restaurant with Savoyarde specialities, and le Table du Trappeur which specialises in grilled and roasted meats. As well as eating out, there are some lively bars, a popular jazz club with a cocktail bar and a sports bar with live music and all the latest matches on large screen T.V’s.
- There are plenty of events and festivals in Megève. There is an International Jazz Festival in March, the Haute Route Alps passes through Megève, as well as the longest one day event in the mountain biking calendar, the MB Race which covers 140km with 7000 metres of elevation gain.
